KUCHING: Some 1,500 pupils at six schools and Bidayuh villagers at Singai in Bau near here now have a wide choice of books to promote their quest for knowledge.

They have the GAB Foundation to thank for as it has sponsored RM70,000 worth of English books and reading facilities at the schools and at the Baruk community library.

The six schools are SK Apar, SK Segong, SK Atas, SK Senibong, SK St John and SK Bobak.

The foundation is Guinness Anchor Bhd’s (GAB) corporate social responsibility arm.

Foundation trustee Charles Ireland, also GAB managing director, said the books were selected carefully and covered general knowledge, literature, specialist areas, education reference materials, encyclopedia and dictionaries.

He said the foundation had helped refurbish the seven libraries with furniture, book shelves and other amenities to provide a conducive reading and learning environment.

“We hope the refurbished school libraries will cultivate a love for books and a thirst for knowledge in the children while the refurbished community library will serve as a useful resource and learning centre for the villagers,” he said before handing over the books to the school and village library representatives.

Ireland also thanked the Association of Research and Development Movement of Singai, Sarawak, (Redeems) for helping in the project.

State Assistant Minister for Environment Datuk Peter Nansian, also Redeems president, said that reading was a gift that sparked the imagination and opened one’s mind to a wealth of infinite knowledge.

He said that children needed access to books in schools, homes and libraries to acquire knowledge.
